Richard "Dick" Holmes

Richard “Dick” Holmes passed away on Friday May 19th, 2023, at Princeton Hospital in Birmingham.  Marshall Memorial Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.  Graveside services will be held at Crestview Cemetery on Monday, May 22nd, 2023, at 11:00 am, with Brother Bill Millican officiating. 

Dick was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Mable Homes.

Dick was born in Tennessee but raised in Somerset, Kentucky.  He played football when he attended Center College and received his undergrad degree.  He then attended the University of Kentucky where he received his master’s degree in chemistry.  Then he served his country in the Korean War in the US Navy. 

After he was discharged from the Navy he met and married the love of his life, the beautiful Sally Kimbrough.  They traveled around the country living in Charlotte, NC, Bartlesville OK, Pensacola FL and then moved to Guntersville.  They were married for nearly 63 years and had 4 children.

He worked at NASA with the Space Shuttle project where he was instrumental in helping improve the heat conductors which helped with reentry back into the atmosphere.

He was a Godly man who loved and attended church at Creekpath Baptist in Guntersville until he moved to Birmingham.

Dick is survived by his wife of 63 years Sally; his children Rick Holmes and his wife Susan; Holly Holmes Williams; Ann Holmes Sears and her husband Rusty and Heather Holmes Burns and her husband Dan; grandchildren Cole R Holmes; Cade R Holmes; Macy Holmes; Weston Williams; Wilder Williams; Walker Jones Williams; Darby Burns; Jamie Sears and his wife Leanna; Carr Sears and Drew Sears and his sister Mariam Martin.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 until the time of the service on Monday at Crestview Cemetery on Wyeth Drive in Guntersville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to Grace Fellowship School in Albertville.
