Barney Lee Powell

Barney Powell, 79, passed away Friday, May 29th, 2020.  Funeral Services will be Monday June 1st, 2020 at 11:00 am at Marshall Memorial Funeral Home.  Burial will follow afterwards in Marshall Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Barry Garrett, Greg Patterson, Clay Jones and AJ Walden.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Ava Lou Powell; and his loving furbaby Boomer.

Barney was born and raised in Albertville, except for a few years that he lived in Gadsden.  He graduated Albertville High School in 1959, then he attended Jacksonville State University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Business.

Barney met the beautiful Carolyn Adams and convinced her to marry him in less than a year’s time.  They married on May 26th, 1963 the day he graduated from Jacksonville State.  Their son Nelson was born in 1966 and they welcomed their daughter Cindy in 1967.

Barney was the Plant Manager at Arrow Shirt Company in Albertville.  Then Barney opened his wholesale car business and was a well-known figure in the Marshall County Area.  Powell Motors is still open and operating today as a wholesale car dealership.

One of Barney’s favorite past times was playing golf with his extremely competitive wife Carolyn.  They traveled all over the South playing golf at different courses. 

He loved driving his John Deere tractor when he was not playing golf.  Cutting the grass was not a chore to him, but a fun time to play on his tractor.

Barney is survived by his adoring wife Carolyn; his son Nelson Powell and his wife Terre; his daughter Cindy Powell and her husband Clay; his grandchildren Destinee and Ko Powell; and his sister Linda Powell.

Visitation will be Monday June 1st, 2020 at Marshall Memorial Funeral Home at 9:00 am until the start of the service.
