Stephen Kunkel, a cherished presence in the lives of many, passed away on June 15, 2026, in Independence, Missouri. Born on February 26, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, Stephen’s journey was marked by kindness, integrity, and a quiet strength that touched everyone he encountered.
To know Stephen was to feel at ease. Whether you were a lifelong friend or meeting him for the first time, he had the remarkable ability to make you feel comfortable no matter the circumstance. His warmth was immediate, his humor gentle and sincere, and he was never short of stories to share, often reminiscing about watching his deer and cats off his porch—a pastime that brought him simple, profound joy.
Stephen was a fantastic husband to his loving wife, Barbara Kunkel, whose memory he honored daily. Deeply devoted, their partnership was a testament to enduring love, a beacon of unwavering support and companionship. Fittingly, Stephen’s last day came poignantly close—just a day after Barbara’s birthday—an echo of the deep connection they shared through every season of their lives together. Barbara preceded Stephen in death, and the abiding love they had for one another remains an inspiration to all who knew them.
Stephen is also preceded in death by his loving parents Raymond and Ann Kunkel, and his sisters Patsy Kapus and Carol Mayday, nephew Stan Creasy.
He is survived by not only his family and friends in Missouri but his Alabama family and friends. Including his sister-in-law Betty Simpson, niece Tyra Creasy, nephews Randall (Robin) Simpson, Ethan Simpson, Chad (Michelle) Simpson. Great nieces and nephews, Mahaley (Matthew) Pendley, Derrick (Annaliese) Simpson, Alan Creasy, Jeremy (Amanda) Creasy, Tristen (Shane) Smith. Grandchildren, Tyler and Blake Stewart. His Loving God children. Amongst a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and other family and friends.
Professionally, Stephen was known for his skilled hands and steadfast work ethic. He began his career as a helicopter repair technician—a profession requiring precision, resolve, and resourcefulness. Later, he brought those same virtues to his work at Progress Rail in Alabama, earning the respect of colleagues with his reliability and dedication.
Stephen delighted in the simplicity and wonder found within each day. The peace of his porch, surrounded by wildlife and his beloved pets, was a sanctuary. Family often recounts how he was affectionately called the "Favorite Yankee Uncle," a title bestowed with affectionate laughter and sincere admiration.
Though he is gone from this world, Stephen’s legacy endures in memories held close by all who loved and admired him. His roots, planted early in Chicago and nurtured through his years in Alabama and Missouri, grew strong and deep. Those who grieve his passing find comfort in recalling the man who always had a seat waiting on his porch, a listening ear, and a ready smile.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Stephen’s life on July 11, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM at Marshall Memorial Funeral Home, located at 3368 AL Hwy 205 N, Albertville, Alabama. This gathering will be a time to remember his generosity, his humor, and the lasting impact he made on all fortunate enough to know him.
